Situated on the Vltava (or in German, die Moldau), the longest river in the country, the city, known as Prag in German, is the political, cultural, and economic center of the Czech state and has a population of 1.2 million. Its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of ca. 1.9 million.

The Moldau, a musical depiction of the river’s course through Bohemia, is also the best-known of Bedřich Smetana’s six symphonic poems Má vlast (“My Fatherland”) and is based on the same theme as Israel’s national anthen, Hatikvah.
